About Dick Button
The two-time Olympic champion, Dick Button is recognized as a former figure skater who became the first non-European citizen to win a European Champion. He is also known to have created the flying camel spin in 1942.
Personal life
He attended Eaglewood School for Boys and Harvard College.
Button was married to the American former figure skater Slavka Kohout but the two separated some few years back.
Career
He made his debut during the 1943 Eastern States Novice Championship and he took second place at the end of the competition. During his rookie years, he participated in other competitions such as the Eastern States senior title and the U.S. Championships. He emerged as the winner in the 1946 U.S. Championship and this win earned him a qualification to partake in the World Championship held in 1947.
His performances qualified him for other renowned competitions such as the European Championships and the Olympic Gold Medal.
Button retired from skating in 1952 and obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Harvard Law School. He also produced television sports events and they include “World Professional Figure Skating Championships”.
He featured in the drama television series “Mr. Broadway” with Craig Stevens and Horace McMahon.
Achievements
He is recognized as the first American skater to win the Olympic title in figure skating. To add up, he is known as the first American to continuously win the Olympic Champion figure skating.
In 1976, Button was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
Trivia
He was among the men who were attacked by a gang of youths at Central Park.
