About Didier Pironi
Born in 1952, Pironi decided to change his route from the family construction business to a professional race driving after receiving the Pilot Elf sponsorship in 1972. He made his Formula One (F1) debut and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans (an endurance car racing event).
Career in F1
After struggling with an underfinanced team for two seasons, he went on to sign with Equipe Ligier and won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1980. He had everything going for him professionally in 1982. The controversial San Marino race where it was believed Pironi tricked his teammate Gilles Villeneuve to win the race caused a ripple effect on his career.
The 1982 San Marino race is believed to have contributed to Gilles Villeneuve’s death two weeks later. During the German Grand Prix in 1982, Pironi smashed into Alan Prost’s car, a violent accident which saw him out of racing for several years.
By 1987, Pironi had recovered from the accident and was able to walk and drive unaided. He decided to try out for offshore powerboat racing since it was improbable that he would go back to Formula 1. Pironi was involved in a fatal accident on August 23, 1987 during the Needles Trophy Race. He was just 35 years old.
Pironi’s girlfriend, Catherine Goux gave birth to their twin sons and named them Gilles and Didier.
Pironi was José Lucien Dolhem’s half-brother and first cousin.
