About Dieudonne Costes
Before embarking on a mission to set flight records, Dieudonne Costes was a member of the French Air Service and participated in the First World War. He started his adventures in the 1920s after serving in the war.
He made the headlines in 1926, when he flew from Paris, France to Jask in Iran. He covered a distance of 5,396 km which became the world’s flight distance record. He went on different flight missions around the world before setting another record in 1929 after he flew from his Paris base to China’s Qiqihar, in a 7,905 km journey.
The following year, he became the first person to pilot a heavier-than-air aircraft from the mainland of Europe to New York in North America.

He was married to Mary Costes, an actress.
Awards
He was a recipient of the Legion of Honour, and the Distinguished Flying Cross medals. In 1929, he received a Harmon Trophy, and a Gold Medal from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.
Trivia
Costes worked as a pilot instructor during the Second World War.
He reached the lieutenant colonel rank before leaving the army.
