About Diocletian
Despite his lowly birth status, Diocletian worked his way up in the military to become the army commander under the reign of Emperor Carus and ultimately the Roman Emperor in 284.
He became the sole Emperor after defeating Carus’ son, Carinus (who also claimed to be the ruler of the Roman Empire) in the Battle of the Margus in July 285.
Diocletian was known for bringing stability to the Empire and ending the Crisis of the Third Century during his reign. His successes were easily chalked through the help of his tetrarchy (appointment of three others to help him rule the empire).
Family Life
Due to his family’s low status, the first 40 years of his life were mysterious.
Death
It is believed that he committed suicide on 3 December 311, six years after he had abdicated the throne and gone on retirement from politics.
