About Dizzy Gillespie
Dizzy Gillespie was an American jazz composer, trumpeter and singer considered one of the greatest trumpeters in the entire history of jazz music. He played an instrumental role in developing modern jazz as well as bebop. Some of his most famous compositions include A Night in Tunisia, Oop Bob Sh' Bam and Salt Peanuts.
Personal Life
He was the youngest of the nine children born to Lottie and James Gillespie. In 1940, he got married to dancer Lorraine Willis. The marriage lasted until his demise in 1993. In 1958, he fathered a daughter named Jeanie Bryson out of wedlock with songwriter Connie Bryson. Jeanie grew up to become a renowned singer.
Achievements
Following his death, he received a number of posthumous honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1995 and an induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2014.
Trivia
He was an adherent of the Baha’i faith.
