About Dock Ellis
Dock Ellis, born Dock Phillip Ellis, Jr, was of a sports personality of American nationality and known as professional baseball player. He made his Major League Baseball debut on June 18, 1968, for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The teams he played for include New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, and New York Mets. He had made 1,136 strikeouts, a 3.46 earned run average, and a 138–119 win–loss record in his career.
Education
He completed Gardena High School. He furthered his studies at Los Angeles Harbor College.
Personal Life
The baseball star married four times. First to Paula and divorced her in 1972. Then to Austine (divorced in 1980); Jacquelyn and Hjordis. He had three children named Shangalesa, Trey and Simone.
He started using drugs and drinking alcohol at the age of 14. At the age of 17, he was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. In 1980, he stopped drinking alcohol and using drugs. In 2007, he was diagnosed with cirrhosis.
Death
In 2008, he died of cirrhosis.
Achievements
He featured in the All-Star game in 1971. He won the World Series championship the same year with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
While playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates he set a “no-hitter” record on June 12, 1970 in a fixture against San Diego Padres.
Trivia
He was caught smoking marijuana in high school.
In 1999, he was ushered into the Baseball Reliquary's Shrine of the Eternals.
He was an advocate for players’ rights.
