About Dolley Madison
Born Dolley Payne, but famously known as Dolley Todd Madison, was the wife of the USA’s fourth president, James Madison. She is known for organizing many Washington meetings and social functions in which she would invite stakeholders of both the two major political parties. Consequently, she helped develop the concept of bipartisan politics in the United States.
She was the first wife of a US president to innovate political institutions. She also helped in furnishing the newly built White House during her time. Again, participating in other key political roles, Dolley helped define the functions of the President’s wife, known later as the “first lady.”
Personal Life
She first married John Todd, a Quaker Lawyer, in 1790, with whom she had two sons (John and William). Unfortunately, during Philadelphia’s 1793 yellow fever epidemic, she lost her husband and William.
She then married James Madison on September 15, 1794.
Honors and Legacy
The World War II ship, “Liberty ship SS Dolly Madison” was built and named to honor her Legacy.
She was a part of the indoctrination class of Virginia Women in History.
Trivia
