About Dolores Huerta
Dolores Huerta is an American civil rights activist and labor leader. She is known best for her work with the National Farmworkers Association, which she co-founded. It became known as the United Farm Workers (UFW) following a merger with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee. Amongst her notable achievements as a labor leader is her involvement in the organization of the 1965 Delano grape strike. She is also known for formulating the “Si, se puede” motto of the UFW.
Family Life
She was born to Juan Fernandez and Alicia Chavez, who got divorced when she was three. From then she and her two brothers were raised by their mother in Stockton, California. She had two daughters with her first husband, Ralph Head. She also had five children with Ventura Huerta, her second husband. She dated fellow labor leader Richard Chavez, with whom she had four children.
Achievements
She is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights.
Trivia
She founded the Dolores Huerta Foundation in 2002.
