On 31st May 2005, Dominique de Villepin was appointed Prime Minister of France. He served for two years under then-President Jacques Chirac. He is also a writer who has penned several essays on history and politics.
Early Years
Born in Rabat, Morocco, Villepin moved around a lot during his childhood, living in Venezuela and the United States. He attended the Lycée Français de New York, where he graduated in 1971 and went on to study at the Institut d’Études nationale d’administration in France to train as a civil servant.
Political Career
After his education, Villepin worked as a diplomat, working in the French embassies located in Washington, D.C, and New Delhi, India. He worked under Chirac and served as the director of the aspiring president’s campaign in 1995. During that time, he served as foreign minister, interior minister before becoming prime minister.
Controversy
Villepin was involved in a scandal in 2004 after an anonymous list of politicians who were accused of depositing bribes into a bank in Luxembourg. Nicolas Sarkozy, who was Villepin’s rival, appeared on the list. Eventually, the list was proven to be fraudulent; however, Villepin kept that information from the public. Sarkozy filed a suit but Villepin was declared innocent in 2010.
