About Don Shula
Don Shula was a legendary American football coach as well as a former player in the NFL. And whereas he had a notable playing career during the 1950s, what he is actually known for is winning the most games as a head coach during the first 100 years in the history of the NFL.
Family Life
His parents were named Mária Miller and Dániel Shula.
He married a lady named Dorothy Bartish in 1958. They went on to have children named Dave, Donna, Sharon, Anne and Mike Shula.
Shortly after his first wife died he married again in 1993 to a lady named Mary Anne Stephens.
Achievements
In 1963 Shula became a head coach at the age of 33, which at that time set the record for youngest head coach in the NFL’s history. He ultimately left the Colts in 1969, having compiled a 71-23-4 record and leading them to the Super Bowl.
He then went on to coach the Dolphins for 25 years, from 1970 to 1995. Cumulatively he had a 347-173-6 record with the squad. This included him winning the Super Bowl with the team in 1972 and 1973.
Even more notable is that during the 1972 season the Dolphins went undefeated. This makes them the only team to accomplish that feat during the 100-year record of the NFL.
Outside of being the winningest coach in NFL history Shula also set a number of other records such as most-consecutive seasons coached and most games coached in general.
Moreover, the stadium at the school he attended, John Carroll University, has been named after him, and there is also an expressway in his honor in Miami, the home of the Dolphins.
Trivia
He also has the distinction of authoring a few books throughout his career.
He ultimately passed away, aged 90, apparently due to old age.
