Donald Rumsfeld is an American businessman and politician known for being the 13th and the 21st United States Secretary of Defense. Other prominent public offices he has held include White House Chief of Staff, which he held from 1974 to 1975 and the United States Ambassador to NATO. Prior to that, he served as the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois' 13th district from 1963 to 1969.

He was born to Jeannette and George Donald Rumsfeld. In 1954, he got married to Joyce H. Pierson, with whom he had two daughters and a son.

In 2005, human rights groups on behalf of former detainees of Abu Ghraib prison filed a lawsuit against him for ignoring the allegations that detainees were tortured by U.S. soldiers. The lawsuit was later dismissed.
