About Donny Hathaway
Donny Hathaway was an American singer, songwriter, keyboardist and arranger. A soul singer, he was acclaimed for his versions of songs such as “The Closer I Get to You”, “Where Is the Love”, both of which he sang with Roberta Flack, and “A Song for You”. He was also known for his own songs such as “Someday We’ll All Be Free”, “The Ghetto” and “This Christmas”.
Personal Life
He grew up under the care of his grandmother, Martha Pitts in St. Louis, Missouri. He joined her grandmum, a professional gospel singer, to sing in church from the age of three. He later earned a scholarship to study music at Howard University. He was married to Eulaulah Vann with whom he had two daughters; singers Eulaulah Donyll and Kenya Canc’Libra.
Achievements
He won one Grammy Award and has been an inductee of the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
Death
He died after jumping from the balcony of his room at the Essex House hotel January 13, 1979.
