Former Jamaican-Canadian sprinter Donovan Anthony Bailey is known for his record of an impressive 9.84 seconds in the 100 meters race during the 1996 Olympic Games.
Early Life
Bailey was the 4th child of 5 sons born to George and Daisy Bailey. He enrolled in the Mount Olivet Primary School and later went to Queen Elizabeth Park High School. He graduated from Sheridan College in 1984 with a degree in Business Administration.
Career and Notable Accomplishments
Bailey began racing professionally in 1990 and made his debut in 1991 when he won the 60-meter dash in the 1991 Pan American Games. He excelled in the 50, 60, 100, 150, and 200-meter events and won 2 gold medals in the 1996 Olympic Games in the 100 meters and 4 by 100 relay. Bailey also won 3 gold medals at the World Championships and a gold medal in the 1994 Commonwealth games.
Personal Life
The athlete has one child, Andrienna Bailey, as of 2021.
Honors
Bailey was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame twice, in 2004 and 2008.
He received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2017.
In 2016, he received the Order of Ontario.
