About Doris Miller
Doris Miller was an American cook who made his name as an officer of the United States Navy. He joined the service in 1939 and was initially assigned to the USS Pyro (AE–1). He became a national hero in 1940 during the Pearl Harbor attack.
During the unfortunate incident, Miller’s ship, the West Virginia battleship, was attacked and hit by the Japanese army. While the ship was gradually sinking, he helped some of the wounded officers to safety, and also shot down a number of the Japanese planes.
Family
He was raised by his parents Henrietta and Connery Miller alongside three siblings.
Education
He studied at Alexander James Moore High School before starting his training at the Naval Training Center, Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, Virginia.
Awards
His bravery during the Pearl Harbor attack earned him a Navy Cross. He was also decorated with the Purple Heart and the American Campaign Medal.
Death
He was aboard the Liscome Bay escort carrier which sank during the infamous Battle of Makin.
Trivia
The USS Miller, a Knox-class frigate which was active between 1973 and 1991, was named in his honor.
