Family
The Ohio-born actress married James Rennie in 1920. However, a decade and a half later, the couple went their separate ways, with divorce proceedings finalized in 1935.
Her mother, Mary Robinson McConnell, and her sister, Lillian Gish, were both actresses.
“Jordan Is a Hard Road” & Other Career Highlights
Gish and her sister Lilian made their first film appearance in "An Unseen Enemy" directed by D. W. Griffith in 1912. They later performed in films such as the five-reel “Old Heidelberg”, directed by John Emerson, and D. W. Griffith’s “Jordan Is a Hard Road”. In the latter film, she starred alongside Frank Campeau and Sarah Truax.
The actress established herself on the cinematic comedy scenes when she played a significant role in the 1918 comedy film “Hearts of the World”, which talked about World War I and the destruction of France. Dorothy Gish performed as the "little disturber", a street singer, paving way for her rise in the movie industry. Directed by D. W. Griffith, the film had cast members that included her sister Lillian Gish, Ben Alexander and Robert Harron.
Other films that she appeared in include: “The Cardinal”, “Tip Toes”, “Madame Pompadour” and “Ben-Hur”. In the latter, a 1925 silent epic adventure-drama film directed by filmmaker Fred Niblo, she was an extra, appearing alongside main cast members like Ramon Novarro, May McAvoy, Claire McDowell, and Carmel Myers, among others.
Honors
She was a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame.
Death
Gish died aged 70 in 1968 from bronchial pneumonia.
