About Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was a producer, actor, and naval officer. He was recognized for his roles in the films “Gunga Din”, “The Prisoner of Zenda”, and “The Corsican Brothers”.
Fairbanks started acting professionally at the age of 13. He was first employed at Paramount Pictures in 1923. That same year, he landed his first professional film role in the movie titled “Stephen Steps Out”. Due to the failure of the film, his contract was terminated. He returned to the same industry a year after, as a camera assistant. This position gave him the opportunity to be cast in the films “The Air Mail”, and “Wild Horse Mesa”. Other films he acted in include “Broken Hearts of Hollywood” in 1926, “The Power of the Press” in 1928, “It's Tough to Be Famous” in 1932, and “The Rise of Catherine the Great” in 1934.
Fairbanks became a naval officer during the Second World War. Due to his selfless service to his nation, he was promoted to the rank of captain. In 1954, he retired as a naval officer and went back to the studios.
Education
He studied at the Hollywood School for Boys, the Bovee School, Knickerbocker Greys, Harvard Military School, Polytechnic School, and Lycée Janson-de-Sailly.
Family
He was born to Anna Beth Sully and Douglas Fairbanks. He got married three times. First to Joan Crawford from 1929 to 1933. Then to Mary Lee Eppling from 1939 to 1988, and lastly to Vera Shelton from 1991 to his death. He birthed three children – Melissa Fairbanks, Daphne Fairbanks, and Victoria Fairbanks.
Death
He died from a heart attack in 2000.
Awards
As a naval officer, the accolades he received include the Silver Star Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1949), Officer of the Order of the Southern Cross (Brazil), and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
As an actor, he has three Hollywood Walk of Fame Stars at 6665 Hollywood Boulevard, 6318 Hollywood Boulevard, and 6710 Hollywood Boulevard. Also, he became an inductee of the Hall of Fame of the International Best Dressed List in 1969.
