About Dudley Nichols
Dudley Nichols was the first person in US film history to decline an Academy Award in support of the Screen Writers Guild, which had been in conflict with the Academy. He later accepted his award in 1938.
Biography
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Nichols worked as a reporter and moved to Hollywood in 1929 to work as a screenwriter. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, he was regarded as one of the best screenwriters in the industry and was noted for his collaborations with directors like John Ford and Jean Renoir.
From 1937-1938, he served as the president of the Screen Writers Guild and he won another Academy Award in 1942 for his screenplay of the documentary “The Battle of Midway.” Nichols also produced and directed the films “Government Girl”, “Sister Kenny”, and “Mourning Becomes Electra.” In 1954, the Writers Guild of America presented him with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
Death
Nichols died in 1960 of cancer.
