About Duke Snider
Famously nicknamed “the Duke of Flatbush” and “the Silver Fox”, Duke Snider was an American pro baseball player. He spent most of his career playing for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers and later joined the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.
Early Years
Snider attended Compton High School, where he was an all-round athlete. He was the quarterback of his school’s football team and was known for his 70-yard throws. After school, he played baseball in the minor league before serving in the U.S Navy from 1945-1946. He made his major league debut the following year with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Achievements
Snider appeared on the National League All-Star roster eight times throughout his baseball career.
He was also the National League MVP runner-up in 1955.
He played a huge role in leading the Dodgers to six World Series, where they won twice – in 1955 and 1959.
In 1980, Snider was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Death
The California-born baseball player died on February 27, 2011, aged 84.
