About E. B. White
B. White is an American writer who began his career as a journalistic journeyman but later put his hand to writing children’s books. And by the time all was said and done he had established himself as perhaps the premiere writer of children’s literature in American history.Family Life
His dad, Samuel Tilly White, ran a piano company. And his mom, Jessie Hart White, was the daughter of a famous painter named William Hart.
His elder brother, Stanley Hart White, was a renowned architect and inventor.
He was married to a fellow writer named Katharine Sergeant from 1929 until she passed away in 1977. And they had a son, Joel White, who was an architect for the US Navy.
Achievements
White has authored many a great children’s novel, such as “Stuart Little” (1945), “Charlotte’s Web” (1952) and “The Trumpet of the Swan” (1970).
Accordingly, he has won some of the most-notable accolades in the business, such as an American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal (1960), a Presidential Medal of Freedom (1963) and a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for Letters (1978).
Indeed, he has been instrumental in shaping the English language itself. For instance, he co-authored an edition of the timeless “The Elements of Style” instructional-writing guide. And said edition, which has been dubbed Strunk & White, was named by Time magazine as one of the “All-Time 100 Nonfiction Books”.
Trivia
He was known to have an affinity for animals, farming and weather patterns, which influenced his works.
He is also known to shy away from publicity, as in not being fond of stardom at all.
