About E. T. A. Hoffmann
He was a German scholar who authored several books, gothic and romantic fantasy ones. He was also a music critic, a composer and an artist.
Personal Life
His name was Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann and was born to Christoph Ludwig Hoffmann who passed away in 1797. His father worked as a barrister and was also a musician. His mother was his father’s cousin by name Lovis Albertina Doerffer who passed away the year before his father. He was one of the three children his parents had but the child born before him passed away. He studied at Lutheran School after his parents ended their marriage.
Career
He started working in 1796 under the employ of his uncle as a clerk. He also started making the effort to work as a composer around the same time. When he had some issues and had to move to Plock, he used that time to focus on his compositions and writings. Some of his novels are “Die Elixiere des Teufels”, (The Devil’s Elixirs) and “Little Zaches”.
Health and death
He struggled with a lot of issues in the latter part of his life. He fell sick often and was plagued by alcoholism. He also suffered from Syphilis and in June of the year 1822, it claimed his life.
