Ed spent his early years in Larchmont, an area situated around the Old Dominion University.
Ed's father, George Schultz was an aeronautical engineer while his mother Mary Schultz taught English.
The renowned journalist attended Larchmont Elementary School, He then continued to Blair Junior High and finally to Maury High School in Norfolk where he graduated with a high school diploma.

Footballer
Ed's career journey kicked off on the football field. He played football for Minnesota State University Moorhead. He then made it to the All-American games and became the NAIA Football Championship Series passing leader in 1977. He was further drafted as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders.

Ed subsequently took his football career to the studio. He ventured into sports anchoring and worked for KTHI-TV and WDAY-TV.
He did commentary and also provided basic analysis during the North Dakota State University (NDSU) football games at the time. However, Ed was asked to take a break after he allegedly incited his colleagues to look for a North Dakota State supporter who was believed to have thrown a bottle at the broadcast booth.

Before his death, he served as a newscaster at RT America. His death was later linked to an underlying heart condition.
