About Eddie Chapman
Eddie Chapman was a notorious criminal who later became a valuable spy for the British MI5.
From a Criminal
At a young age, Chapman slid into a life of crime; from petty theft and fraud to impersonation and safecracking; often with criminal gangs in London, England.
The serial lawbreaker was transferred to a French prison after the Germans invaded a British Island on which he was incarcerated. He expressed interest in spying on Britain for the German version of the CIA – the Abwehr.
The Abwehr trained Chapman for a year and dispatched him to Britain to destroy a major military aircraft factory. He defected to the British MI5 immediately he arrived on British soil; unbeknownst to the Germans.
To a Hero
British intelligence agency MI5 faked an explosion at the aircraft factory; and redeployed Eddie to Germany, where he was awarded the Iron Cross – the highest recognition in Germany – for his work for the Abwehr.
The shrewd double-agent averted several German plots against Britain and its allies during the Second World War.
Chapman was later pardoned for several of his crimes and was rewarded handsomely. The celebrated infiltrator later wrote three books detailing his escapades.
