Early Life
This Texan musician was born into a musical family and started playing the piano at a young age. He got the nickname “Cleanhead” when he shaved off his hair completely following a disastrous attempt to straighten his hair.
Accolades
Vinson joined the Cootie Williams Orchestra in 1941 when he moved to New York, where he recorded "Cherry Red". He formed his band in 1945 and debuted with singles like “Kidney Stew” and “Cleanhead Blues”. By the 1960s, he was well known and toured with Johnny Otis Revue into the mid-70s. He continued to perform with his band as well as other notable jazz artists well into the early 1980s.
Death
Vinson’s journey ended on July 2, 1988. The cause of death was a heart attack.
