About Edith Stein
Edith Stein, also called “Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross”, was a German intellectual and philosopher who became famous after converting to Christianity and becoming a nun of the “Discalced Carmelites”. Unfortunately, the “Nazis” murdered her because she was a Catholic of Jewish descent. She was later recognized as a Catholic martyr and saint and was one of Europe’s six Roman Catholic Patron Saints.
Early Life & Education
She was born in Breslau (currently Wrocław, Poland). After enrolling at the University of Gottingen in 1913, her studies were halted in 1914 because of World War I. During the war, she was a volunteer Red Cross nurse. In 1916, she completed her Ph.D. thesis at the University of Freiburg.
Catholicism & Career
In the 1920s, she was attracted to Catholicism and was baptized in January 1922. She then lectured at the Institute for Pedagogy, but because of the laws of the Nazi government, she was eventually forced to quit lecturing. Finally, in 1934, she was admitted into Cologne’s “Carmelite monastery” and produced several brilliant spiritual and philosophical works.
Death
In August 1942, unfortunately, she was part of the many Catholics of Jewish descent who the “Gestapo” arrested following Adolf Hitler’s order. She died at age 50 after being murdered in the gas chamber at the “Auschwitz concentration camp” on August 9, 1942.
