About Edith Wharton
Edith Wharton was an American author and designer. She mainly focused on novels and short stories for her writing.
Born into a wealthy aristocratic family, she had first-hand knowledge of the upper-class way of life and employed that in her works. Her most popular novels include “The House of Mirth”, “The Age of Innocence” and “Ethan Frome”.
Besides her story writing, she found joy in interior and garden designing and wrote books on them as well.
Family Life
She was born to Lucretia Stevens Rhinelander and George Frederic Jones as Edith Newbold Jones. She was her parents’ youngest of three children and only daughter.
From 1885 to 1913, she was married to Edward Robbins Wharton. She reportedly dated journalist Morton Fullerton while she was still married to Wharton.
Achievements
The Pulitzer Prize for literature in 1921 went to her novel, “The Age of Innocence”.
Death
She died on 11 August 1937 of a stroke.
