About Edmond Rostand
The French poet and playwright had a distinctive gift of blending political satire with science fantasy which proved inspirational to his contemporaries. His 1897 play “Cyrano de Bergerac” is arguably his most notable work.
Early Life
Born to a well-to-do family in Marseille, France, he read philosophy, history and literature at the Collège Stanislas, Paris.
Literary Works
At age 20, his first play, “Le Gant rouge,” was performed at the Cluny Theatre. He published his poetry collection “Les Musardises” in 1890. He followed that work with the successful drama “Les Romanesque's.” His most renowned play ”Cyrano de Bergerac" featured D'Artagnan, the main character in “The Three Musketeers.”
Family
He married fellow playwright and poet, Rosemonde Gérard. They shared two sons.
Accolade
As of the time he was appointed to the Académie française in 1902, he was the youngest to have attained that honor.
