About Edna St. Vincent Millay
Having actively written poems since her early teens, Edna St. Vincent Millay first came to national attention at 20 years old when her poem, “Renascence” an entry in a 1912 poetry contest organized by The Lyric Year took the fourth prize. She used her poetry to advocate feminism, social and political activism. Through the popularity of her poems, she was hired as a performance artist to read her poems to eager audiences at different locations nationwide. Besides poems, she also wrote short stories and novels under the pen name Nancy Boyd.
Personal Life
At the age of 12, her mother Coral Lounella Buzelle divorced her father, Henry Tolman Millay. She had two sisters, including actress Norma Lounella. She had a reputation for her numerous short-term affairs with both men and women. Although she married Eugen Jan Boissevain from 1923 until his death in 1949, they both continued to have extra-marital affairs.
Achievements
She was the 1923 recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the 1943 Robert Frost Medal.
Death
She died from a coronary occlusion-induced heart attack on October 19, 1950.
