American artist and multiple honorary doctorate-holder Edward Joseph Ruscha IV is known for his pop art movement and his flat, textual paintings.
Early Life
Ruscha was born to Edward and Dorothy Ruscha. He was attracted to cartooning at an early age and attended the California Institute of the Arts from 1956 to 1960.
Career
The artist later became a visiting professor at the University of California, where he taught painting and drawing in 1969. The first of Ruscha's paintings were primarily oil-based paintings on paper in 1961. He invested in Liquid word paintings from 1967 to 1969. Some of his notable works are “Large Trademark with Eight Spotlights” in 1961, “Every Building on the Sunset Strip” in 1996, and "Standard Station" in that same year.
Personal Life
The artist married Danna Knego from 1967 to 1972 and later divorced and remarried her again in 1987.
Achievements
The artist was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters as a member of the Department of Art in 2021.
Ruscha received an honorary doctorate degree from California College of the Arts in 2001.
He won the “Cultural Award” from the German Society for Photography in 2006.
