About Ehud Barak
In 1959, Ehud Barak was listed as a member of the Israel Defense Forces. For 35 years, he served in the Force and rose to the Rav Aluf rank before retiring. Despite holding different political positions, he actively joined politics in 1995 after he was named Israel’s Internal Affairs Minister under the leadership of Yitzhak Rabin.
That same year, he was appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Known for his time with the Labor Party, he served as the deputy prime minister during the Ehud Olmert administration. In 1999, he was elected the country’s Prime Minister, becoming the tenth person to serve in that position.
He announced his retirement in 2013, but returned six years later with a party known as Israel Democratic Party.
Parents
He was originally named Ehud Brog, and was raised by his parents Yisrael Mendel Brog and Esther Godin. He has been married to Nili Priel since 2007. Prior to that, he was the husband of social activist Nava Cohen. Before their divorce in 2003, they had three kids named Yael, Anat, and Michal.
Education
He read mathematics and physics at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He did his master’s program at California’s Stanford University.
Decorations
During his service in the military, he received many honors including the Medal of Distinguished Service, and the Legion of Merit.
