Eileen Heckart, born Anna Eileen Herbert, was a phenomenal American film, television, and stage actress. She enjoyed over six decades of success as an actress, starring in numerous projects and winning multiple awards until she retired in 2000.
Early Life & Education
J.W Heckart, her grandmother’s son, adopted her from her mother after her birth. He then changed her surname from Herbert to Heckart.
Eileen held a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama from the Ohio State University and studied drama at the H.B. Studio in New York City.
Acting Career Highlights
In the early 1940s, Eileen worked as a deputy stage manager and was part of many Off-Broadway and Broadway productions, such as “The Voice of the Turtle” and “Picnic.”
The actress made her first mainstream feature film appearance in 1956 with the classic film “Miracle in the Rain.” In 1972, she received massive acclaim for her role in “Butterflies Are Free.”
The actress also made numerous appearances on television in many famous series, including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Love & War,” and “The Cosby Show.”
Awards
She was a two-time Emmy Award winner and one-time Academy winner. She also received a Tony Award and is represented by a star on the “Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
Cause of Death
She died from lung cancer, aged 82, on the last day of 2001.
