About Elias Canetti
Bulgarian writer Elias Canetti, who often wrote in German, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981 for his body of work that cut across several academic fields and offered studies and insights into compulsive behavior. "Auto-da-fé" (1935–1936) and "Crowds and Power" are two of his best-known works (1960).
Family Life
The acclaimed writer tied the knot twice. His first marriage was to Austrian novelist and playwright Veza Taubner-Calderon in 1934. Veza often served as his muse and assistant. Eight years after the death of Veza, the Nobel Prize won the heart of Hera Buschor. The two got married in 1971. By Hera, he fathered a daughter called Johanna.
Career
“Die Blendung” (1935), was a summary of the turmoil he saw during a public rage over inflation in Frankfurt and the burning of the Vienna Palace of Justice in 1927.
He moved to England in 1938 to study the appeal of fascism and mass psychology. One of his most famous works, “Masse und Macht” (1960; Crowds and Power), is a development of that interest.
Accomplishments and Awards
In addition to winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, Canetti won the following awardS:
- In 1981, he received the Franz Kafka Prize, and the Federal Republic of Germany's Grand Merit Cross was presented to him in 1982.
- The University of Manchester honored him with an honorary doctorate in 1975.
- He won the Nelly Sachs Prize in 1975.
