American inventor
Elias Howe Rank
About Elias Howe
Although a few inventors had received patents for their designs of sewing machines decades before him, it was the addition of three distinct features which set Elias Howe Jr’s machine apart from the rest. The features, which are still seen in modern machines, were the eyepoint needle, an automatic feed and a lock stitch. The inventor earned a patent for his lockstitch sewing machine in 1846.
Family Life
He was the son of Polly and Dr Elias Howe Sr. Amasa Howe, his elder brother, was instrumental in finding him funding for his machine. He had three children from his marriage to Elizabeth Jennings Ames. They divorced in 1850.
Achievements
He was a gold medal recipient at the 1867 Paris Exhibition.
Later Life and Death
He won a lawsuit against Isaac Singer and Walter Hunt, who had been selling machines based on an improvement of his design. It earned him royalties, which made him a multi-millionaire. He passed away on October 3, 1867 due to a blood clot situation.
