He had written 57 books, including novels, plays and children's books. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992, the Medal of Liberty and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. The Nobel Committee called him a "Messenger to mankind". He had been also named "Commander of the Order of the British Empire".
His Personal Life
He was born in Romania in 1928. He was of Romanian, Hungarian and German descent. His parents and one of his 3 siblings did not survive the Holocaust. He was married to Marion Erster Rose.
