About Elihu Root
Root was the 38th United States Secretary from 1905 to 1909 under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt.
Early Life
He was born of English lineage to Orin Root and Nancy Whitney Buttrick in Clinton, New York. He had his education at Williston Seminary, Hamilton College and New York University School of Law.
Career Highlights
Before beginning his political career, he served as a lawyer and represented popular public figures including Jay Gould, E.H. Harriman and William C. Whitney.
In 1883, he was appointed by Arthur to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
In 1899, he became the Secretary of War for the U.S. under the leaderships of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. During his years as Secretary of War, he built the U.S Army War College.
After resigning from his duties, he went back to practice law.
Aside from being a politician and lawyer, he also published books including “The Citizens Part in Government” and “Experiments in Government and the Essentials of the Constitution”.
Personal Life
He was married to Clara Frances Wales. The couple had three children.
Awards
He received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown from Belgium.
He was also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.
