About Elijah McCoy
Elijah McCoy was a 19th century Canadian-born American inventor of African descent known for having as many as 57 U.S. patents to his name. Throughout his life he invented numerous things, the most prominent being his Mechanical Lubricator. He is one of the most famous inventors in the American history. In 2001, he was honored with a posthumous induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Family Life
He was one of twelve children born to his parents Mildred and George McCoy. In 1868, he married his first wife Ann Elizabeth Stewart. Ann died four years after their marriage. His second marriage was to Mary Eleanor Delaney in 1873. This marriage also ended with Mary's death in 1922.
Trivia
His parents were runaway slaves who escaped the United States to Canada.
In 1922, he and his wife Mary were involved in a car accident that claimed Mary's life and left him with severe injuries.
