About Élisée Reclus
The French geographer played a leading role in the field of social geography. His 18,000-paged book, “Nouvelle Géographie Universelle,” continues to be a go-to geographical resource for the current generation.
Early Life
Born in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, he was one of 11 surviving children of a Protestant priest. He studied at the University of Berlin.
Notable Works
He was renowned for his political writings and projects that were often global in scope. He made a number of Latin American publications, including “Voyage à la Sierra-Nevada de Sainte-Marthe” and “Pasages de la nature tropicale”. The latter detailed his experiences during his travels in Coastal Colombia.
In his ground-breaking book, “L'homme et la Terre,” he explains that man and nature co-exist and that humanity is nature aware of itself. He also published several important essays, including “La Chine et la diplomatie européenne” and “L’Enseignement de la géographie.”
Accolade
He received the Gold medal of the Paris Geographic Society for his works.
