About Elizabeth Hawes
Elizabeth Hawes was an American author, vocal critic of the fashion business, and designer who made simple, distinctive, elegant, and functional outfits for affluent women. She was part of the first group of American designers to build their careers outside of Paris high couture.
Biography
She studied fashion design in Paris after graduating from Vassar College. She worked in the couture industry for the next three years in a variety of roles, including assistant designer. Under the pen name "Parisite," she contributed a fashion piece to The New Yorker.
In 1928, she moved back to New York and partnered with Rosemary Harden to launch her own custom dressmaking company. She gave theme-related names to the ensembles in her collections: The political Spring/Summer 1933 collection featured outfits like "The Five Year Plan," a cotton nightgown and bed jacket. She promoted women's equality in her book "Why Women Cry."
Personal Life and Death
She was married to Ralph Jester, an American sculptor and designer, in 1930. The marriage lasted for a few years and the couple got divorced in 1935.
The fashion designer passed away in 1971 of a disease to the liver.
