About Elmer Layden
Elmer Layden, who was regarded as one of the "four horsemen" of Notre Dame, was a legendary athlete who achieved greatness both on and off the field as a player, coach, and sports executive.
Biography
He became an all-state Fullback at Davenport High School (now Davenport central high school). In college, he played for Notre Dame, where he earned the nickname "The Four Horseman" together with Quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, halfbacks Jim Crowley, and Don Miller. The group is still regarded as one of the best backfields in college football history.
Before working as head coach at his alma mater in 1933, he served as head coach at Columbia College and Duquesne University after his playing days. He served as an NFL Commissioner for five years beginning in 1941.
Honors
He was a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.

He wed Edythe Davis.
