Elsa Schiaparelli was one of the most dynamic and influential figures in European fashion of the 20th century. She was a highly talented fashion designer and was famous for her eccentric and surreal fashion designs. Background & Early Life
She was born to an Italian aristocratic family in Palazzo Corsini, Rome. The cultural background of her family, consisting of religious and ancient cultures, ignited her imaginative faculties while growing up. She wrote several poems, including “Arethusa,” based on an ancient Greek myth.
However, she fled from her family to London to avoid marrying a Russian suitor.
Fashion Career
In the late 1920s, she relocated to Paris and established her couture house, “house of Schiaparelli,” in 1927. By the mid-1930s, she became a leading figure in “haute couture” and began expanding into cosmetics, jewelry, swimsuits, lingerie, and perfume. In 1947, her bright color, “shocking pink,” became a worldwide fashion sensation.
She settled in New York in the 1940s and established a branch of “house of Schiaparelli” in 1949, which mass-produced her designs. She collaborated with famous designers Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau.
Death
She died in Paris, France, at age 83, on 13 November 1973.
