He was born in Graz, Austria, and began his career in his native with Sturm Graz. At age 17 and in 2000, he moved to FC Kärnten and, after a year, joined German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
As a youth, he starred for the Under 16, 18, 19, and 21 sides of Austria.
Professional Career Highlights
He played at the center-back position for the majority of his career. In his 19-years of professional club football he played for 14 teams in 6 countries, including FC Kärnten, FC Aarau, Bayer Leverkusen II, Union Berlin, Middlesbrough, Hannover 96, Spartak Moscow, Vfl Wolfsburg, West Ham, FC Nürnberg, Columbus Crew SC, and LASK Linz. He made over 400 appearances.
Internationally he made 61 caps for the Austria National team between 2002 and 2014.
Coaching Career
He was an assistant coach of FC Juniors OÖ and LASK Linz in the 2020-21 season. As of 2021, he was the assistant coach of St. Pölten.
