About Emil Cioran
Emil Cioran was a Romanian philosopher and author who wrote extensively on philosophical pessimism. His works contain themes underpinned by a half-glass-empty view.
Family Life
He attended Gheorghe Lazăr High School, where he studied humanities. Later, he studied philosophy at the University of Bucharest. In the early 1940s, he began a long-term relationship with Simone Boué.
Career Highlights and Notable Works
When he was 23, he wrote his first book, “On the Heights of Despair” (Pe culmile disperării), in just a few weeks whilst battling insomnia. The book was first published in Romanian in 1934 and was about man's mental state and complete loss of faith. The book received the Young Writers Prize as well as the Commission's Prize for a new young writer.
He wrote numerous books on social issues, particularly with themes of human suffering and nihilism.
In the years that followed after his first book, he published three more critical pieces of his work. Between 1935 and 1937, in Romania: "The Book of Delusions”, "The Transfiguration of Romania," and "Tears and Saints".
Other notable works of the Romanian thinker include: "A Short History of Decay" (Précis de décomposition) in 1949, "The Fall into Time" (La Chute dans le temps) in 1964, and “The Evil Demiuge” (Le Mauvais démiurge) in 1969. Those three works were published by the French publishing house Éditions Gallimard.

In the ‘70s and ‘80s, Cioran’s works were outlawed by Romanian dictator and communist Nicolae Ceaușescu.
His work “The Evil Demiurge” was banned in Spain for a period during dictatorial rule of Francisco Franco.
Death
He died on June 20, 1995, in Paris, of Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.
Trivia
His book, 'A Short History of Decay,' was awarded the prestigious Prix Rivarol Prize, which he declined. He also declined awards such as Prix Rogier Namier and Grand prix de littérature Paul-Morand.
