About Émile Zola
Émile Zola was a French novelist, playwright and journalist regarded as the father of naturalism. He was one of the most famous French novelist of the late 19th century whose best known works include Les Rougon-Macquart, Thérèse Raquin, and Germinal. He is also known for his instrumental role in the political liberalization of France. He died from carbon monoxide poisoning, which many suspect was perpetrated by his enemies.
Personal Life
He married Éléonore-Alexandrine Meley in 1870. The marriage produced no children. However, he had two children from an extramarital relationship he had with a seamstress named Jeanne Rozerot.
Trivia
He was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902.
He played an instrumental role in the exoneration of Captain Alfred Dreyfus who was falsely accused of treason and jailed in a case that became known as the Dreyfus affair.
