About Emmett Kelly
With his dreams of being a cartoonist crushed due to his inability to find work despite having been trained in the field, Emmett Kelly started working as a laborer for circuses and carnivals. He went on to become a trapeze artist after receiving training. He is remembered best for his creation of the Weary Willie clown character, which he brought to life in a circus in the 1920s. He appeared in the 1958 film, “Wind Across” as Bigamy Bob.
Family Life
He was the son of a railroad worker. His mother enrolled him in a cartooning school. His 1923 marriage to Eva Mae Moore ended in a divorce. From 1955 until his death, he was married to Elvira Gebhardt. He was the father of American clown Emmett Leo Kelly Jr. and three others.
Achievements
He is a member of the International Clown Hall of Fame and the International Circus Hall of Fame.
Death
He died on March 28, 1979 from a heart attack.
