About Emory Tate
Emory Tate was described as a trailblazer to African-Americans in the history of chess. He was a five-time Armed Forces Chess Champion.
Background
He was born to an attorney and learned to play chess as a young boy of ten. He also served in the United States Air Force where he picked up some languages such as Spanish, German and Russian.
Career
He started competing in chess in the early 1990s and by 2006 he was ranked 72nd in the United States. He then became an international chess master in 2007 after winning three titles in the 2006 World Open. Tate has been crowned the Armed Forces Chess Champion five times and won the Indiana State titles six times. This Chicago native was inducted into the Indiana State Chess Hall of Fame in 2005.
Personal Life
Tate had three children including former kickboxer Andrew Tate.
Death
Tate slumped suddenly while playing at a chess tournament in 2015. Sadly he died at the age of 56.
