About Empress Elisabeth of Austria
Born Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria, Empress Elisabeth of Austria was suddenly shoved into a formal life as royalty upon her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I in April 1854. It was a sharp contrast to the informal life she had been exposed to in her 16-year-old life.
Although she initially struggled as the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, her standing at court improved with time, especially after she bore an heir, Crown Prince Rudolf.
She is known to have influenced the creation of the Austria-Hungary dual monarchy in 1867.
Family Life
She was an offspring of Princess Ludovika of Bavaria and Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria. She married Franz Joseph I in 1854. They had four children together; three daughters and a son.
Death
She died after she was stabbed by Luigi Lucheni, an anarchist, in Switzerland on 10 September 1898.
Trivia
She is remembered for having been obsessed with preserving a youthful look and so she was involved in rigorous physical and beauty regimen to achieve it.
