Italian politician Enrico Berlinguer was a member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and served as its general secretary from 1972-1984.
Early Life & Career
Berlinguer was born to Mario Berlinguer and Maria Lorigo in Sassari. The family came from a noble background and Mario was a socialist, who later became a senator. In 1943, Berlinguer led the Young Communists group in his hometown. The following year, he was jailed for three months after demonstrating against Italy’s Fascist regime.
He continued to rally up the communist youth in major cities like Milan and Rome, eventually becoming a member of the PCI in 1945. He held several roles before becoming general secretary in 1972.
General Secretary
Berlinguer was an influential figure. He became the first communist in 15 years to have played an advisory role to the Italian Prime Minister in 1976 and in 1979, became a member of the European Parliament.
However, in the late 1970s to early 1980s, his relationship soured with the Soviet Union, as he chose to support the Western military alliance – North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Death
The politician died of a brain hemorrhage.
