Early Life
By age 15 Macias had begun to play guitar for orchestras. He migrated from Algeria to France with his wife Suzy Leyris in 1961 after the assassination of his father-in-law and musician Cheikh Raymon Leyris.
Career in France
Macias translated Arab, Judeo and Andalusian songs and also performed in cafes and cabarets. After the release of the song “Adieu Mon Pays”, he went on to release songs like “Bresil” and “Generosite”. He was also featured in many films and documentaries, including “Tutti Frutti”
The 1960s saw him embark on tours in the Middle East, Turkey and America in 1964; he was once invited to sing for peace in Egypt during El Sadat’s era.
Honor
Macias earned a 1965 Prix Vincent Scotto award and a gold disc in 1976. He was also honored by UN secretary-generals Kofi Annan and Kurt Waldheim for his works in promoting peace around the world. He was honored as Roving Ambassador for Peace and the Defence of Children.
