About Eppa Rixey
As an educated chemist, Eppa Rixey seemed like the unlikely person to play baseball in the 1920s but this Hall of Famer played 21 seasons in the Major League Baseball (MLB). He was the first left-handed pitcher to have 266 wins.
Background
Eppa was born into a prominent aristocratic Virginia family; he graduated in 1912 with a degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia. His talent in baseball caught the attention of baseball umpire Cy Rigler who helped him sign for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Career
Signed directly from school, Eppa Rixey’s first season was inconsistent. By his second season, he had improved and helped his team win the National League pennant and the finals of the 1915 World Series.
Rixey, who was described as a gentle yet terrible loser, was transferred to the Cincinnati Reds after eight seasons of 87 wins and 103 losses with the Phillies. He retired in 1934 with a total of 266 wins in 692 games.
