About Eric Sykes
Born in Lancashire, Eric Sykes was a notable film writer, actor, comedian and director.
Career
He gained a reputation working with the likes of Johnny Speight, Tony Hancock and John Antrobus. In the 1950’s, his work on ‘The Goon Show’ scripts was his debut and was well accepted. He was acknowledged as a star for his performance in ‘BBC’, a comedy series.
Personal Life
During the Second World War, he realized he was going deaf and two surgeries did little to improve his situation. He started using a hearing aid. As he grew, his sight also deteriorated. In 1997, he had a quadruple heart bypass surgery and had a stroke five years later. He was married to Edith Eleanore Milbrandt for sixty years.
Achievements and Awards
Between 1961 and 2002, he received over fifteen awards including the 1961 Guild of TV Producers and Directors’ Lifetime Achievement Award, 1992 Lifetime Achievement Award from Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, 1998 Honorary Fellowship of the University of Lancaster, 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grand Order of Water Rats and he was named the 2002 Oldie of the Year.
Death
In July 2012, Sykes Eric fell sick and a short time after, he passed on.
