About Erich Honecker
Erich Honecker was 18 years old when he entered full-time political activity as a leader of the Young Communist League of Germany (KJVD) in 1931. He received a 10-year sentence from the Nazis for high treason in 1937. He was released after World War II and he established the Free German Youth the next year. He eventually became the leader of the German Democratic Republic (officially the Chairman of the State Council of East Germany), serving from 1976 until 1989. He also held the posts of Chairman of the National Defense Council and General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (1971-1989).
Family Life
He was the offspring of Caroline Catharine Weidenhof and Wilhelm Honecker. He had five siblings. He lost his first wife, Charlotte Schanuel to a brain tumor after only six months of marriage. His second marriage to Edith Baumann ended in a divorce. He was married to Margot Feist, his third wife for four decades. He had two daughters.
Death
He died on May 29, 1994 from liver cancer.
